Accessibility Transformation & Empathy Workshops Summary

Accessibility
User Research

Role:

  • 90% Remediation Rate:
Raised detailed Jira tickets for all audit findings and worked directly with engineering teams to resolve 90% of the identified accessibility barriers.
  • Lasting Organisational Impact:
Successfully advocated for accessibility to be written into team OKRs—committing HDR UK to annual audits for every product and a mandatory 70% fix rate. This secured permanent resource allocation and cemented an inclusive, design-led culture across the organisation.

Objective

While health data services must be open and inclusive, accessibility standards across our core platforms needed formalisation to ensure compliance with WCAG 2.2 AA guidelines. The goal was not just to fix current interface bugs, but to fundamentally change the engineering and product culture so accessibility was treated as a core requirement rather than an afterthought.

  • Methodical Auditing & Testing
Developed an accessibility checklist, mapped priority user flows, and conducted a thorough WCAG 2.2 audit. To ensure real-world validity, I complemented automated and manual checks with usability testing sessions involving a visually impaired user.
  • Fostering Team Empathy
Facilitated hands-on accessibility and empathy workshops for the entire technology team. Using visual impairment simulation glasses, dexterity-limiting gloves, and screen readers, team members experienced firsthand the barriers created by inaccessible design.
  • Operationalising Standards
Automated testing checks were introduced into both Figma design libraries and development pipelines to catch issues early.
